A SIMPLE FLOWER POWER

We welcome Mimi Gegg as our Director of the Tranquility Center. She brings much to the table of relaxation training including flowers. See williampenzer.com for a video of our Tranquility Center. Mimi can help you learn about meditation, guided imagery, creating safe spaces, biofeedback, heart math and much more.

This week she brought in floweres and put them in a vase atop our water cooler with a sign simply saying, "take one." I did and everytime I look at it I think peace, tranquility and calm. It symbolizes what we all search for and struggle to locate. Funny enough, they are all around us,often in the simplest of ways.

Many who have taken a flower have commented how it brightened their day. Sometimes it takes a village. Other times it takes as little as a single flower. Perhaps the flower children of the 60's were onto something. I am pleased we are bringing that energy back into our center.

Contact Mimi at 954 696 1248. Maybe she will give you a flower and a whole lot more tranquility.

YOU GOTTA COUNT IT ALL

Our personal accounting is often faulty. We tend to give ourselves -10 for a minor failing and +1 for an important accomplishment. "Oh, it was nothing," are words that reflect this imbalance. If people managed their bank accounts the way they manage their personal account, they would always be in the red and soon be bankrupt.

It is important to count it all and count it fairly. In some respects emotional bankruptcy is worse than the financial kind. This is precisely why I created the idea of a "shame and blame" account and a "pride bank." My goal is to help people identify and keep track of their emotional assets and liabilities. I encourage you to count the former and work on the latter and try objectively, to give it all a fair rating.

In all liklihood the plusses deserve 10+,the minuses 1-3...Ok maybe a 4 and in most areas of life 7 out of 10 ain't bad at all-- unless of course it is geometry or calculus in which case, join the club!

ON LISTENING TO YOUR HEART

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE:

TO LISTEN TO YOUR HEART

Our world is loud, fast and chaotic.
We need time to pause.
To look around us.
To hear our heart.
It knows things our mind can't understand.
Take time out.
Freeze frame your daily life.
Be open to your heart.
Listen to it.

From It's Never to late...by Patrick Lindsay

At our Tranquility Center we can teach you how to tune in to your heart and take time for you. More on this later in the week.

7 Out OF 10 Ain't Bad -- Part II

On May 6, 2009 I wrote Part I about my making 7 of 10 foul shots--at my age no less! After I thought about it I realized that is 70%. Not quite bragging rights in school, but definitely so in the school yard or at the Y.

What that tells us is that how we evaluate our success or lack thereof is complicated. Much depends on the situation and the specifics. If an otherwise A/B student gets a 7 out of 10 in geometry that says s/he sucks in math and is definitely not slated for an accounting, engineering or physics major. It does not say that s/he sucks as a student or as a person. Thank goodeness for that as I had an allergy to math that persists to this day.

Yet, too often we judge ourselves in that harsh and self-critical tone. Many, especially those people whose self-esteem is low, do not give themseleves the benefit of the doubt. Instead they doubt and diss themseveles every step of the way.

Perfectionistic and unrealistic expectations create a sense of inferiority, despite the person deserving to feel adequate and more so. Unfortunately, in most cases, bruises and their scars left in childhood linger long after they are relevant. Most of the time they were inaccurate to begin with, but inflicted by those in powerful positions-- parents, teachers, coaches... We bought their bull!

Tune in tomorrow for a helpful way out of this trap.

THIS VERY MOMENT!

Mental health professionals speak about staying present in the moment of our lives.By doing that we deal with what is going on right then and there. It is a way to dodge historical hurts as well as future fears. They believe the only reality is here and now. They are correct best as I can tell.

This goal has its origins in Eastern philosophy. It is easier said than done. Our minds tend to race back and forth along many converging lines. With practice, one can become more present centered, more now focused and more able to enjoy life--one moment, one hour, one day at a time.

Taking a few moments every day to be mindful is an interesting and relaxing
experience. Just close your eyes, take a few deep belly breaths and begin to tune into the sounds and sensations that surround you or are within you.

Observe a tingling in your toe or an itch on your ear. Move to the sound of the AC kicking on or going off. Hear the lawn mower in the distance or see the flashes of light within your closed eyes.Or just be aware of the rhythmic vibrations of your breathing. Don't react in any way, just observe, take note, stay with it or move on.

Focus, pay attention, become aware and observe the peace inducing benefits of being mindful. It is definitely a "smell the roses" experience that helps counterbalance the stresses of our lives. Try it...you will definitely like it.

SEER IOUSLY

I have never been very good at predicting the future. I don't think most people are able to do that well.

Who, but a small few, could have predicted the techno revolution that is still in its infancy. Back at IBM in the late 60's, computers took up huge rooms at frigid temperatures. When punch cards gave way to large tape drives--boy-- that was innovation in its finest hour. How many of you have ever seen a tape drive? Raise your hand. At that time who would ever have thought that people could carry a computer aka a telephone around in their shirt pocket or purse?

So much has changed in our life time. So much more will change in the next 10+ years.Amazing things will happen to make our lives, health and minds better. Let us look forward to these marvels with anticipation and excitement.

In the meantime, let's focus on the present(see tomorrows blog). We need to stop lamenting the past as it is over and done with--just like tape drives! We need to stop worrying about the future as it will be good and not so good depending. We need to stay in the here and now and look forward optomistically to "what's coming around the corner." Hopefully, it will be good for you and yours.

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE

As I said last week, "You just never know what's coming around the corner." I went to a dinner on Tuesday nite. They gave each of us a gift bag. Mine had a copy of "The Last Lecture," which I already read and loved for all of its positivism and inspiration. It takes a "mensch" (yiddish for a good man) to write that as he is dying.

Someone took my bag. Instead, the hostess gave me a copy of "It's Never Too Late," by Patrick Lindsay. It was "beshert!" (yiddish for mean't to be). It is a neat book filled with wise and inspiring thoughts. Here is a sample that correlates to last weeks HOPEFUL blogs, as well as those dealing with active vs. passive.

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE....

TO MAKE PLANS

Looking ahead takes you out of the daily grind.
Planning ahead brings hope. (Told you So)
Small plans first, with realistic goals.
Build confidence.
Then make bigger plans with bigger goals.
Always have plans.
